A Brief Overview of Eco-Friendly Paints

The choices of eco-friendly paints on the market are plenty, albeit it’s fewer than the traditional chemically-riddled paints. Nonetheless, you’re still going to be met with dozens of choices, and any first-time buyer will find the ordeal to be confusing and challenging. With a broad range of brands and types to choose from the market, you need to get yourself educated as much as possible about the whole idea of using environment-friendly paints.

In this regard, you should first know the difference between water-based paints and natural paints. Understand what these paints are made of, as well as their strengths and limitations. Once you know and understand these points of interest, only then can you properly decide on which eco-friendly paint to buy.

Natural Eco-Friendly Paints

As mentioned in the introductory section of this post, there are several different types of eco-friendly paints available on the market. In that regard, there’s a broad range of natural paints that are readily available for purchase. Manufacturers use waxes, oils, and plant dyes for these environment-friendly paints, and they can come in differently-sized containers depending on the desired application. Perhaps the most common types of natural paints are the following: milk paint, clay paint, and lime washes.

Low VOC Paints

Another type of eco-friendly paint that you should definitely think about purchasing are low VOC paints. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, and these harsh chemicals can cause nausea, breathing problems, headaches, and even cancer. There are now many paint manufacturers who take advantage of putting as little to no VOCs in their products, and these items don’t just include their paints, but also their sealers, varnishes, and thinners.

Exterior Eco-Friendly Paints

Most environment-friendly paints you can find on today’s market are suitable for indoor use. Hence, you can still find eco-friendly paints for outdoor painting jobs, but the number is going to be fewer in comparison with finding indoor paint options. It’s because many natural material-based paints (with the exception of lime washes) aren’t going to be durable enough to withstand the harshness of the outside world. For individuals seeking outdoor environment-friendly paints, then you might want to choose low VOC exterior paints instead.
